Inlays and Onlays for Tooth Repair

When over half of a tooth’s biting surface is damaged, we frequently use an inlay or onlay to restore its anatomy.

What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are crafted from porcelain, gold, or composite resin and are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. An inlay, similar to a dental filling, is placed within the cusp tips of the tooth.

Traditionally, gold has been the preferred material for inlays and onlays. However, in recent years, porcelain has gained popularity for its strength and ability to match the natural color of your teeth.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?

Two appointments are required for the completion of inlays and onlays.

First Appointment

During the first visit, we remove the damaged or decayed area of the tooth (or the existing filling) and prepare it for the inlay or onlay. To ensure a proper fit and bite, we take an impression of the tooth and send it to a lab for fabrication. Dr. Kooper then applies a temporary sealant to protect the tooth and schedules your next appointment.

Second Appointment

At the second appointment, the temporary sealant is removed. Dr. Kooper will then ensure that the inlay or onlay fits properly. If everything is satisfactory, the inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth using a strong resin and polished to a smooth finish.

Considerations for Inlays and Onlays

Traditional fillings can weaken a natural tooth by as much as 50 percent. In contrast, inlays and onlays are bonded directly to the tooth using high-strength resins, increasing its strength by up to 75 percent. As a result, they generally last between 10 to 30 years. In cases where tooth damage isn’t extensive enough to require a full dental crown, onlays offer an excellent alternative.
