Understanding Oral Cancer Risks and Causes
Oral cancer can develop in various areas of the mouth and throat, including the tongue, tonsils, gums, the floor of the mouth, lips, cheeks, and hard palate. While anyone can be affected, men are at a higher risk, with those over the age of 50, especially heavy smokers and frequent alcohol users, being particularly vulnerable. Other risk factors include exposure to UV radiation (from the sun or tanning beds), gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), previous radiation treatments for head and neck cancers, exposure to certain chemicals, and poor dietary habits. Additionally, there has been a rise in cases of oropharyngeal cancer linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection.
Why Oral Cancer Awareness is Crucial
Oral cancer is one of the top ten most common cancers worldwide. However, advancements in research, prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment have significantly improved patient outcomes. When detected early, the survival rate for oral cancer can exceed 80%, highlighting the importance of regular screenings for early detection.
