What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations designed to repair damaged teeth, crafted from materials such as porcelain, gold, or composite resin. Inlays fit neatly within the tooth's cusp tips, similar to a filling, while onlays cover one or more cusps for more extensive repairs.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?
The process of getting inlays and onlays typically requires two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist will carefully remove the damaged portion of the tooth and take an impression to create a custom restoration. A temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth while the permanent inlay or onlay is crafted.
At the second appointment, the permanent inlay or onlay is fitted, adjusted for proper fit and bite, and then bonded securely to the tooth. The result is a restored tooth that blends seamlessly with your natural smile, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal.
First Appointment
During your first visit, we will remove the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth (or any old filling) and prepare the area for the inlay or onlay. To ensure a precise fit and proper bite, we take an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental lab for custom fabrication. In the meantime, Dr. Kooper will apply a temporary sealant to protect the tooth. Once the restoration is ready, we’ll schedule your next appointment to complete the procedure.
Second Appointment
During the second appointment, the temporary sealant is carefully removed. Dr. Kooper will then check the fit of the inlay or onlay to ensure it aligns properly with your bite. Once everything is perfect, the restoration is securely bonded to the tooth using a durable resin and polished to a smooth, natural-looking finish.
Key Considerations for Inlays and Onlays
Traditional fillings can weaken a tooth by up to 50 percent. In contrast, inlays and onlays are bonded directly to the tooth with high-strength resins, improving its strength by as much as 75 percent. As a result, these restorations can last between 10 and 30 years. When tooth damage isn’t severe enough to need a full crown, onlays provide a highly effective alternative.
