Tooth Repair With Inlays and Onlays
When over 50% of a tooth's biting surface is damaged, we typically use an inlay or onlay to repair its structure.
Dental Inlays and Onlays: An Overview
Inlays and onlays are personalized dental restorations made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin that are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. Inlays are placed within the cusp tips of the tooth, similar to a dental filling. While gold has traditionally been the preferred material for inlays and onlays, porcelain is gaining popularity for its durability and ability to match the natural color of teeth seamlessly.
How to Apply Inlays and Onlays?
You will need to schedule two appointments to complete the inlays and onlays.
First Appointment
During your first visit, we will remove any damaged or decayed parts of the tooth or existing filling and prepare it for the inlays or onlays. To ensure a precise fit and bite, we will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a lab for fabrication. Dr. Kooper Ruminer will then apply a temporary sealant to protect the tooth and schedule your next appointment.
Second Appointment
At the second appointment, the temporary sealant will be removed. Dr. Kooper will then verify the proper fit of the inlay or onlay. If everything is satisfactory, the inlays or onlays will be bonded to the tooth using a strong resin and polished for a seamless finish.
Considerations for Inlays and Onlays
Did you know that traditional fillings can weaken a tooth by up to 50%? Inlays and onlays, however, are bonded with high-strength resins, reinforcing the tooth’s structure by up to 75%. This added strength allows them to last 10 to 30 years! If your tooth damage isn’t severe enough for a full crown, onlays provide a durable and lasting alternative.
