Inlays and Onlays for Tooth Repair

If more than half of a tooth's biting surface is damaged, we often use an inlay or onlay to restore its structure.

What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom-made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin and are attached to the affected area of the tooth. An inlay, like a dental filling, is placed within the cusp tips of the tooth.

Historically, gold has been the favored material for inlays and onlays. Nevertheless, porcelain has become increasingly popular due to its durability and ability to blend seamlessly with the natural color of your teeth.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?

Two appointments are necessary to finish inlays and onlays.

First Appointment

On your initial visit, we will remove any damaged or decayed parts of the tooth or existing filling and prepare it for the inlay or onlay. To ensure a precise fit and bite, we will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a lab for fabrication. Dr. Kooper will then apply a temporary sealant to protect the tooth and schedule your next appointment.

Second Appointment

During the second appointment, the temporary sealant will be taken off. Dr. Kooper will then check to make sure the inlay or onlay fits correctly. If everything looks good, the inlay or onlay will be attached to the tooth with a durable resin and polished for a smooth finish.

Considerations for Inlays and Onlays

Did you know that traditional fillings can weaken a natural tooth by up to 50 percent? In contrast, inlays and onlays are bonded directly to the tooth using high-strength resins, increasing its strength by as much as 75 percent. This means they can last between 10 to 30 years. If your tooth damage doesn't require a full dental crown, onlays are a great alternative. Contact our office today at 405-468-9611 in Arcadia, OK for more information about our inlays and onlays!
