Inlays and Onlays for Tooth Repair

When over 50% of a tooth's biting surface is damaged, we typically use an inlay or onlay to repair its structure.

What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are personalized dental restorations made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin that are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. Inlays are placed within the cusp tips of the tooth, similar to a dental filling. While gold has traditionally been the preferred material for inlays and onlays, porcelain has gained popularity for its strength and ability to match the natural color of teeth.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?

You will need to schedule two appointments to complete inlays and onlays.

First Appointment

During your first visit, we will remove any damaged or decayed parts of the tooth or existing filling and prepare it for the inlay or onlay. To ensure a perfect fit and bite, we will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a lab for fabrication. After that, a temporary sealant will be applied by Dr. Kooper to protect the tooth until your next appointment.

Second Appointment

At the second appointment, the temporary sealant will be removed. Dr. Kooper will then verify the proper fit of the inlay or onlay. If everything is satisfactory, the inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth using a strong resin and polished for a seamless finish.

Considerations for Inlays and Onlays

Did you know that traditional fillings can weaken a natural tooth by up to 50 percent? In contrast, inlays and onlays are bonded directly to the tooth using high-strength resins, increasing its strength by as much as 75 percent. This means they can last between 10 to 30 years. If your tooth damage doesn't require a full dental crown, onlays are a great alternative. Contact our office today at 405-468-9611 in Bethany, OK for more information about our inlays and onlays!
